The Maxim Project

On June 18,1999, I found a 1963 Maxim S Model Pump sitting in a junkyard in Norfolk, MA. On June 22, I purchased the truck. On June 26, I drove the truck from Norfolk to Medford (about 40 miles)-Much to my amazement, It made it!!!

Here are the preliminary photos of the truck, taken on June 22 at the junkyard. Space was limited, so the photos are a little cramped.

My intentions are to retore the vhicle to it's original delivery specifications, and I will be documenting that process through photos and scans on this page.

The vehicle was formerly Pembroke, MA Engine 1, and after speaking with the department mechanic in Pembroke, I found that this vehicle was in front line service from it's delivery in 1963, until it was replaced with a new KME Pumper in 1996. If anyone has photos of this piece at any time in it's career, I would appreciate hearing from you. Please contact me via e-mail.

8/15/2000-Well, It seems that this page has been neglected, so I'll provide an update.  The restoration has been slow to say the least.  I recently replaced the original dual fuel pump with an updated single fuel pump (this is still original, as this upgrade was common practice by Maxim due to non-availability of the original parts), and have obtained a barrel for the deck gun and a 1-1/2" nozzle (Thanks Jen!).  I have also obtained a length of 2-1/2" hose.  It's not much, but it is a start.  I have added a coat of chrome paint to the diamond plate on the front fenders, and on the running boards.  The paint was put on just to see how it would look, as I had doubts about "chrome" paint.  It actually looks pretty good, but the diamond plate needs to be sanded and repainted, as there is still rust under the paint.  It may not be pretty, but I will hopefully be displaying the rig at Public Safety Expo 2000 hosted by Providence Citywide in Providence, RI on August 20, 2000.  This is a big step, as I have not shown this vehicle to the public beyond this web page, and I am hoping that it will serve as a "before" image, with the fully restored piece being the "after" image.  I will definitely take photos of the rig at the show, and post them here when I get back.

8/20/2000-After working all week to get the truck ready, the fuel pump that I installed is not working properly, and the truck will not go to Providence as planned.  There is a show in Milton, MA coming up, and hopefully that will be the truck's debut.
